Juice is a hydrating, great tasting, and refreshing beverage! Juices also provide vitamins and minerals.

One-hundred per cent fruit juice is a great source of essential nutrients. Research shows that people who drink 100% fruit juice have better quality diets than non-juice drinkers (1), and are more likely to meet dietary recommendations for vitamins A and C, folate, magnesium and potassium (2). In addition, 100% fruit juice drinkers eat more whole fruit than non-fruit juice drinkers (3), suggesting that 100% fruit juice is complementary with whole fruit intake.

Types of Juice Beverages

There are a number of terms associated with 100% juice and juice drinks that help determine the percentage of juice content and its form.

100% pure or 100% juice

Juice that is directly squeezed from a fruit or vegetable.

Not from Concentrate Juice

Juice that has not had any water removed once extracted.

Reconstituted Juice from Concentrate

Sometimes juice can be made from a juice concentrate that is reconstituted with water, and could contain certain other ingredients such as vitamin C, sweetening agents or acidification ingredients to balance flavour.

Shelf-Stable Juice

Juice that does not require refrigeration. Once opened, all juices must be refrigerated.

Canned Juices

Fruit or vegetable juice that has been heated and sealed in cans to provide an extended shelf life. Once opened, canned juice should be refrigerated in a container other than the can it came in, and consumed within one week.

Juices in TetraPak

This is a shelf-stable product that requires no refrigeration. It is not-from-concentrate juice or juice from concentrate, packaged in sterilized containers or preserved by a specific sterilization technique.

Juices in Bottles

Juices in plastic or glass bottles that have been sterilized and bottled hot and at an appropriate pH and pressure to prevent spoilage.

Chilled Juices

Chilled, Ready-to-Serve

Juice sold cold. It is packaged in paper cartons, plastic or glass containers.

Frozen Concentrate

This juice has been concentrated and frozen. Prior to consumption, it must be reconstituted with water per the instructions on the container.

Juice Drinks

Also referred to as cocktails or punch, these drinks contain less than 100% juice, and may contain low-calorie sweeteners, sugars, and extra water.
