In 2024, Canada’s non-alcoholic beverage industry added $5.8 billion to Canada’s GDP, supported over 45,000 full-time equivalent jobs, and generated $2.3 billion in tax revenues across all levels of government.

Amidst broader economic challenges facing the Canadian economy, the non-alcoholic beverage sector continues to navigate business uncertainty, increased material costs, and supply chain pressures have impacted productivity, profit margins, and sectoral GDP.

With the right conditions, the beverage sector is ready to invest sustainably, improve beverage container recovery rates, and strengthen a nationwide sector while maintaining competitiveness.

By working in partnership with federal and provincial governments, Canada’s beverage producers can refresh opportunity, sustainability, and investment, turning today’s challenges into tomorrow’s growth.

In 2024, the non-alcoholic beverage sector directly supported over 16,000 full-time equivalent jobs and more than 29,000 indirect and induced jobs across Canada. From suppliers to producers to recyclers, the sector is deeply rooted in communities across the country. For every dollar of output that the industry produces, the Canadian economy benefits an additional $0.80 in GDP.

As a best practice leader in sustainability, the beverage industry continues to be at the forefront of Canada’s circular economy by driving progress in the collection, recycling, and repurposing of its packaging from coast to coast to coast. Harmonizing extended producer responsibility (EPR) systems through a National Recycling Framework would enable economies of scale and minimize disruption for industry, ensuring a stable supply of recycled material to meet the industry’s recycled content targets.

A high reliance on imports for manufacturing inputs (aluminum cans, plastic bottles, ingredients, some juices) makes the industry sensitive to business and trade uncertainty. Ensuring fair and stable trade policies will unlock investment in the sector will ensure the sector’s continued contribution to Canada’s GDP and allow the sector to remain competitive, benefitting consumers in Canada and the United States.
